Aogashima: Great places for you to visit in Japan

This time, I want to share one of my favorite travel destinations in Japan. Aogashima is a small island located at the southernmost point of the Izu Islands, which belong to Tokyo. It is known as one of the hardest places to visit in Japan. However, it's precisely this remoteness that makes Aogashima so special.

Natural Beauty

Aogashima has a unique double caldera landscape, where an inner caldera is surrounded by an outer rim of mountains. This breathtaking natural scenery leaves a strong impression on visitors. At night, you can enjoy a stunning view of the starry sky, thanks to the lack of light pollution. It’s one of the best places for stargazing.

Hot Springs and Steamed Dishes

The island has several hot springs due to volcanic activity, with "Hingya no Yu" being the most famous. In addition to relaxing in the hot springs, you can try Aogashima's special steamed dishes cooked using geothermal heat, called "hingya." Fresh local fish and vegetables are steamed to perfection, enhancing their natural flavors.

Untouched Nature and Tranquility

Aogashima has a very small population and is surrounded by untouched nature. Since there are few tourists, you can enjoy the peace and quiet, away from the noise of the city. For those who love hiking and trekking, exploring the island is an incredibly rewarding experience.

Interacting with the Locals

With a population of around 150 people, Aogashima is a close-knit community. Since there aren’t many tourists, it’s easy to get to know the locals. Their warm hospitality and stories about life on the island will give you a deeper understanding of Aogashima’s charm.

The Challenge of Getting There

Access to Aogashima is by ferry or helicopter, but it’s often affected by weather conditions, making it difficult to reach the island. However, the sense of accomplishment and uniqueness you feel upon arrival is worth the challenge.

Aogashima is truly a hidden gem. Its tranquility, natural beauty, and the warmth of its residents offer a unique experience for those who visit.
